Traditional Orthodontic Treatment for Reliable Results
An economical, durable, and time-tested method for straightening teeth, braces can resolve a wide range of orthodontic conditions relating to the teeth and jaws.
This is why traditional braces continue to be a popular choice for kids needing orthodontic treatment.
For most kids who need orthodontic treatment, it is recommended that braces are installed once all of their permanent teeth have grown in, which is usually between the ages of 11 and 13. These braces can then work to correct misaligned teeth or jaws in the newly emerged teeth.
Children as young as seven can be candidates for braces in rare cases. This only happens when it is necessary to adjust the baby teeth to make room for the adult teeth to come in in their proper positions, or to correct crossbites and other functional issues.
Consultations & Monitoring for Children
Children should visit the orthodontist for the first time around the age of seven for an orthodontic consultation. This visit will give us an opportunity to determine if any orthodontic treatment is needed.
If it is, we'll commence with a treatment plan. If not, we offer free assessment appointments every six to 12 months until your child is ready for braces.
Features of Braces for Kids
If you're a parent considering braces for your child, it is important to know that braces have changed since you were a kid. Here's how:
More Efficient
Kids who are not looking forward to getting braces will be happy to know that today's braces are more efficient at correcting misalignments than they used to be due to innovations in orthodontic technology. This means treatment is shorter and easier for today's kids than in the past.
More Streamlined
Braces used to be known for being bulky and sharp, and headgear was often used. Now, metal braces are small and light, and are designed to be more comfortable and effective than before. An additional bonus is that modern braces typically only need to be adjusted every four to six weeks!
More Fun
Some kids find that braces can be a fun addition to their look! Many of our young patients look forward to changing the colour of their braces' elastics at each adjustment appointment. Some even like to choose a mixture of colours for extra flair.
Braces Offered at Clayton Orthodontics
Most types of braces straighten teeth using a combination of brackets, elastic bands, and wires.
At our clinic in Halifax, we offer LightForce™ braces and translucent braces, in addition to traditional metal ones.
Both these styles work the same as traditional braces, but translucent braces use ceramic, tooth-coloured brackets to blend in with your child's smile, and LightForce braces use clear 3D printed brackets.
