What are Clear Aligners for Children?
Clear aligners for children are an orthodontic treatment option designed specifically for the growing smiles of children.
These aligners are designed to straighten teeth and expand the arches of a child's mouth, guiding healthy development.
Most kids who need orthodontic intervention to correct misaligned teeth or jaws begin treatment with clear aligners between the ages of 11 and 13, when all their permanent teeth have grown in.
Clear aligners are only used when necessary on children with baby teeth. They can be used to create space for adult teeth to erupt in the proper positions, or correct functional issues like crossbites.
At Clayton Orthodontics, we offer Invisalign First and 3M™ Clarity™ Aligners to correct kids' smiles.
Consultations & Monitoring for Children
Children should visit the orthodontist for the first time around the age of seven for an orthodontic consultation. This visit will give us an opportunity to determine if any orthodontic treatment is needed.
The Clear Aligner Process at Clayton Orthodontics
Invisalign First and 3M Clarity Aligners straighten teeth by applying gentle, constant pressure to them over a period time.
At the outset of treatment, Dr. Roth with take a digital scan of your child's mouth so that their custom aligners can be made.
Then, a series of clear aligners will be created, each one designed to slightly shift their teeth more and more into the desired positions.
Children will wear each aligner for about two weeks before switching to the next set in the series until the teeth are where they should be.
How are Clear Aligners for Children Different?
Compared to standard clear aligners, clear aligners for children are designed to be smaller to accommodate their small mouths and baby teeth.
They also feature eruption compensation, leaving room for baby teeth to fall out and adult teeth to grow in seamlessly.
Here are a few features of clear aligners that may make them a great choice for kids:
- No friction from metal brackets.
- Removable aligners that make it easier to maintain thorough oral hygiene.
- Removable aligners also mean none of the food restrictions that come with braces.
- Clear aligners that are discreet when worn for more self-conscious kids.
